It is with deep sadness that I share with you the news of the untimely death of long time Shield Bearer therapist and dear friend, Cindy Therwhanger.
Cindy dedicated her professional career to caring for others. She began with a Bachelor in Social Work from West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M. She then completed her Masters in Social Work from University of Maryland at Baltimore. Cindy worked in social services and as a therapist for over twenty five years. Over the past fifteen years, Cindy was deeply dedicated to therapy services for survivors of domestic violence and also frequently worked with children, couples, individuals, and families around trauma, grief and loss issues, and PTSD. She was deeply admired and appreciated by colleagues in her field.
Cindy also freely shared her expertise by teaching classes about domestic violence, boundaries, and co-dependency. She was a board certified supervisor for the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners and enjoyed guiding clinical interns as they began their careers. Her colleagues and students frequently commented on her sound judgment, level of expertise, strong moral convictions, and kind heart.
Cindy was a wonderful listener and incredibly sensitive to the needs of others. She was creative, fun, and gracious. She was always the first to send a note of thanks and the first to volunteer when needed. She was an insightful, dedicated, and talented therapist, a teacher, a mentor, a leader, a beloved mother and grandmother, and a cherished friend that we will forever hold in our hearts.
Please keep Cindy's family, clients, friends, and our Shield Bearer family in your prayers in the days ahead.

When you think about Shield Bearer, please think about eight year old Caleb*. Caleb and his family had to be evacuated during Harvey. Caleb's grandfather was carried away by the strong current and drowned as they were being loaded into the boat. Caleb now has trouble sleeping and eating and is experiencing frequent panic attacks. We are thankful that Caleb's pastor recommended Shield Bearer, and Caleb is now recovering from the trauma of losing his grandfather in the storm. We are thankful that supporters like you make it possible for Caleb to get the care he needs to heal from this trauma.
